I was so pumped to ...I tried this recipe yesterday! I was so pumped to find a crock pot recipe for lasagna. I HIT A SNAG THOUGH!!! I got home from the grocery store and I started prepping everything. I did a double take at my tomato sauce and realized I grabbed WHOLE TOMATOES instead of tomato sauce. Grrrr! So, I ran to my cupboard and searched it over hoping to find some tomato sauce hidden in the back. I had no such luck. But I did have Ragu. I had first decided to add chopped onions and garlic to my meat sauce, but now that I had to substitute with Ragu I scratched my original plan. I added about 3/4 water to the Ragu to thin it out and stirred in the browned meat. (Next time I may use 1/2 c water) I went to pour in my first bottom layer and quickly found out I didn't have enough meat sauce to do 3 layers because I have a 7qt crock pot. I only managed to have enough for 2 layers. I was a little worried that my cooking time would be way different than what you listed due to this minor detail. I didn't want my bottom to burn either. I put the lid on and turned it on 8 hours low heat and set my timer for 3 1/2 hours. I did hover over it a little because I hit too many snags along the way. I discovered, after 3 hours of cooking, it was almost done. After 3 hours and 20 minutes I took it out to cool and topped it with lots of shredded mozzarella and a handful of grated parmesan. I was so happy when I cut into it and found that it cooked so evenly throughout. I let my husband take the first bite to be the judge of the sauce substitute. His reaction was very pleasant! He loved it. I loved it. Both kids loved it. And that speaks volumes because I have a daughter who has extreme eating issues. This recipe is definitely going to be a staple around our home! Thank you for taking the time to share your yummy recipe!!!!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02975903595252235784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8002328172567039692.post-40311884738459557742013-11-11T08:46:35.375-07:002013-11-11T08:46:35.375-07:00There's no such thing as a stupid question. Cooking it to the point where the outside is brown is what you want any further cooking will happen in the crockpot. Do you brown the ground beef in a pan on your stove top and then put in it in the crook pot or do you brown it in the crook pot? Also does browning mean you're cooking it completely or just enough so that the outside is cooked, but the inside is still red/pink?Yours Trulyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14646712679228828037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8002328172567039692.post-51412572134975129532013-10-29T17:03:23.251-06:002013-10-29T17:03:23.251-06:00Found your recipe on pinterest and I love it!! I also don't have a high/low setting on my crockpot, you just plug it in, so there is no ability to control the temperature. I halved the recipe and it still took up almost the whole crockpot, and then I only turned it on for 2.5 hours and it was done. However mine turned out very runny/not like a traditional "piece" of lasagna. It tastes the same, just kinda makes a blob on a plate though. Like the commenter before me, my meat was a bit overdone around the edges - I had cooked it on low for 2.5 hours then kept it on warm for 2 hours until the guys got home. Next time I'll do 2 hours on low, and an hour on warm - I think that'll work fine. DS1 had 2 huge servings, hubby and DS2 each had a big plate, then DS1 packed up the leftovers for work lunches for Thursday and Friday - we got 6 "hungry electrician" sized servings from it :) I used a jar of Ragu spaghetti sauce plus a cup of water, threw a chopped onion in with the hamburger, used ricotta instead of cottage cheese, and used 12 lasagna noodles (9 would have worked, but I wanted to finish off the box, lol). I'll definitely be making this again - WOW!Sandra :)https://www.blogger.com/profile/16239494415344028806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8002328172567039692.post-85746298891261621252013-08-23T09:47:09.129-06:002013-08-23T09:47:09.129-06:00FYI there is no e-mail attached to your profile. The moisture is what helps cook the dry noodles. Also you could try cream cheese or goats cheese. I absolutely hate warm cottage cheese, and I cannot eat Ricotta or I'll be very very ill. BUT my spouse loves cottage cheese so I'm willing to give it a go here....but do I drain the extra milk out of the cottage cheese first? If not I fear it'd be a milky soup.
