Crock-Pot Hot Chocolate

When I spotted gingerbread marshmallows in the store the other day I couldn't resist them. They are absolutely adorable and I knew I had to make some hot chocolate for them to adorn. Just because Christmas is over doesn't mean the gingerbread men have to go away. No I would say they are safe to be out and enjoyed all winter long. Not only are these marshmallows cute but they are so tasty, I would venture to say better than plain marshmallows. Who ever thought up these marshmallows is brilliant!

Crock Pot Hot Chocolate
serves 8
Ideal slow cooker size: 3 qt

Ingredients:
1/2 cup dry baking cocoa
12 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1/8 teaspoon salt
7 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Marshmallows, as many as you want

Directions:
1.) In crock-pot combine milk, water and vanilla.
2.) Add dry cocoa and salt, stir until smooth.
3.) Cover and cook on high 2 hours or on low for 4 hrs or until very hot.
4.) Top each serving with marshmallows, I also love whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon

Tips:
  • To speed things up, heat the water before adding it to the chocolate mixture.
  • Add a mocha flavor by stirring in instant coffee in step 2.
  • Add a cinnamon stick for a delicious twist.
  • If the edges burn you might want to cook it at a lower temperature next time. The hot chocolate isn't ruined you just don't want hit the sides when stirring and serving so that the little bits wont float in your drink.

  3. Made this for the kids for breakfast today, for my picky kids. They said it was great! I added just a little bit more salt and accidentally used a 14 oz can of milk, and added a small smattering of chocolate chips. Thanks so much for the recipe!!

    1. Did you use chocolate chips instead of dry cocoa?

  5. I just made this but all I had was a can of condensed milk that I had previously boiled for several hours in a pot of water for a different recipe. I used it and it turned out amazing! Gives it a toffee flavour! I just had to use a whisk for the first while to break it up.

  10. I am making this now as a trial. So far, it looks and tastes great. If it passes (and I'm sure it will)the family taste test, I'm going to multiply it X 6, cook it in an 18qt roaster and serve it at my daughter's lunchtime Youth Group meeting.

  12. This looks ridiculously easy and yummy! But Idk about all the water.. I like my hot chocolate to be thick. Should I just use less water then?

  13. I am making this for a work party so I dont want to mess it up! Question for you - did you use the unsweetened cocoa powder? I have hershey's unsweetened at home so wondering if that is what you used and the sweetened milk is the sugar of it? Thanks!

  14. I tried this for my son's birthday. It turned out horrible. I don't know what I did wrong. I did everything the recipe said. I would not recommend this.

  15. Aw I'm sorry it didn't work out for you :( I've heard from a few others that didn't use sweetned condensed milk but evaporated milk. That will make a huge difference.

  16. I'm surprised water was used? Has anyone substituted milk for the water?

    1. Water is added because the recipe calls for sweetned condensed milk which is very thick. Milk would probably work instead of water but would make a much richer hot chocolate. I have substituted coffee for the water before and that makes for a delicious mocha.

  17. I made this recipe today for my quilting group's cookie exchange. I did not have any sweetened condensed milk, so I made my own last night and refrigerated it. I used 3 cups of organic whole milk and 4 1/2 cups water, and homemade vanilla. I have to say this hot chocolate is just yummy, and I thank you for the recipe! This recipe will be made again, as it is easy, delicious, and the crock pot does all the work, thus saving some electricity too. Thanks again!
